Q&A: How can I get rid of tired, puffy eyes?

Todays Chicago Woman - 2006

During our lives, we tend to experience an excess of skin around our eyes. Additionally, the fat around our eyes tends to move closer to the skin, giving us a tired and puffy look. A blepharoplasty, or upper or lower eyelid procedure, will improve and correct these issues. An upper blepharoplasty I I is performed through a hidden incision "in the Stacie McClane, M.D. upper eyelid crease. A lower eyelid procedure IS either performed from the inside of the lower eyelid (no visible scar) or just below the lash line. Many patients can have blepharoplasties with local anesthesia, and the entire procedure takes less than one hour. Minimal swelling and bruising is common after. Most patients can wear makeup and comfortably go out in public in about one week. In addition to a blepharoplasty, Botox® can also soften lines around the eyes.

Q&A: I just read about a new injectable called Juvéderm. There are so many out there - which is the best to use?

Todays Chicago Woman - 2006

Many times it's best to use a combination of injectables to address and treat your specific trouble areas. Botox is generally used to treat wrinkles in the upper face that are caused by facial movements, making it a wonderful product to soften the wrinkles in your forehead or around your eyes. Restylane, on the other hand, is a versatile thin clear gel made of hyaluronic acid and can be used to fill in your lips and other fine lines in your face. Results typically last about six months. Radiesse is a longer-lasting filler and does a nice job augmenting cheek folds and improving the jaw line. Juvederm is a new product, a more cross-linked form of hyaluronic acid available for the correction of facial lines. It's important for any patient to consult with their doctor first and customize a plan that will work best for them.

Q&A: I've heard of a procedure called the Minilift. What does it accomplish?

Todays Chicago Woman - 2006

The Minilift is a facial rejuvenation procedure that can be done in about an hour using local anesthesia (no general anesthesia or IV sedation is required). In general, many patients are happy with this procedure because they consider it less invasive than a traditional facelift and there's relatively little recovery time. If you have deepened cheek folds and looseness in the tissue around your lower face and neck, you may be an ideal candidate. During a Minilift, a layer of skin called the SMAS is tightened and any excess skin removed. This results in tighter cheek folds, a more defined jaw line and a smoother neck. In my practice, I use absorbable sutures to improve the cosmetic appearance during the healing time, which patients find both comfortable and convenient.

Q&A: I'm not ready for a full facelift with general anesthesia. Is there a less invasive procedure that can restore a more youthful appearance?

Todays Chicago Woman - 2006

A Minilift may be an ideal procedure for you. A Minilift is a minimally invasive procedure that can be done under local anesthetic in about one hour. The procedure can give wonderful improvements and a more youthful appearance of the face. Because the procedure is less invasive than a traditional facelift, the recovery time is shorter and there are fewer risks. Most patients have very little bruising and swelling. Some patients even return to work the next day. Beginning in our 30s, our faces begin to age in a natural and predictable manner. During a Minilift, I tighten this tissue and then gently remove any excess skin. The results can be subtle or dramatic depending upon the needs and goals of each individual patient. Benefits include immediate results and gratification with relatively little down time.
